Quick Verdict: The AYN Thor is a dual-screen clamshell with a 6-inch 120 Hz AMOLED on top, a 3.92-inch AMOLED on the bottom, and a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 driving both. For DS and 3DS there is nothing else like it, and Retro Game Corps was “still wowed” four months in. The trade is ergonomics: flat triggers every reviewer hated, a low right stick, 380 grams, and a grip most reviewers called mandatory. Buy the Base or Pro tier direct at $329 or $409. Skip the Lite, and skip the Amazon listings at $640 and up.
Method: I have not used a Thor. This page comes from AYN’s spec sheet, the Retro Game Corps video review, and written reviews from Retro Handhelds, Joey’s Retro Handhelds, Steam Deck HQ, DROIX, Retro Dodo and Held Games, across Base and Pro units from November 2025 through April 2026. Where they conflict, I say so.
One thing to get straight before the specs, because the name does not tell you: the Thor is not a slab. It is a DS-style clamshell with two touchscreens. That is the whole reason it exists.

One quiet change to know about: the Thor launched with UFS 4.0 storage and later batches moved to UFS 3.1. It does not change emulation, but it is the kind of thing AYN does without a headline.
Price, Batches and Shipping
The Thor was announced August 19, 2025, opened pre-orders on August 26, and the first 8 Gen 2 units shipped October 15. The Lite slipped to January 2026. Launch prices were $249, $299, $349 and $429. AYN has raised prices three times since, citing memory costs: $10 to $20 in January 2026, a jump on the Max in April that also added a 16 GB / 512 GB tier, and another round in June. Today’s Batch 7 prices are $259 to $579.
It ships, but as rolling pre-order batches. AYN’s shipment dashboard shows Thor serials going out from August 7 through September 12, 2026, and the Black Lite reads as backordered. Trustpilot reviewers report waits of one to four months. Plan on that.
Amazon is not the answer to the wait. The Amazon listings for the Pro sit around $643 and the Max around $869, which is $230 to $290 over direct. That is a reseller margin, not Amazon’s usual convenience premium. Buy from AYN direct or the official AliExpress store that opened in January 2026, and use a card with purchase protection.
AYN’s support record is the same one that follows every AYN device: Trustpilot 2.5 out of 5 across 32 reviews, 56 percent one-star, with ghosted support and Thor delays as the recurring themes. The hardware is good. The company is slow.
Design and Ergonomics
This is where the reviews split, and the split is real, so I am giving it more room than usual.
The screens. Every reviewer led with them. Retro Handhelds called them incredible. Retro Dodo scored the device 9.4 out of 10 on the strength of them. Two AMOLEDs, both touch, the top one at 120 Hz. For DS and 3DS it is the layout the games were designed around, at a resolution the originals never had.
The triggers. This is the complaint. They are flat and sharp-edged. Retro Handhelds’ ergonomics follow-up called them “the greatest sin.” Joey’s called them the biggest blunder. Steam Deck HQ reported hand strain without a grip. Held Games said a grip is near-mandatory.
The right stick sits low, below the face buttons, which Retro Handhelds’ reviewer found a dealbreaker for anything stick-heavy.
The power button is on the bottom edge, where you press it by accident.
The hinge is metal-reinforced and locks at three angles only. Retro Dodo called the snap aggressive. Joey’s reported chassis flex.
Small stuff. A squeaky or sticking A button on two review units. Tinny speakers with weak bass. The bottom screen runs hot, 45°C on the right side per DROIX. The fan peaks at 63 dB, which is loud, though it is quiet on the default curve.
The counterweight is Retro Game Corps. Russ posted four months after his review that he was still wowed by it and still using it. Retro Dodo’s 9.4 came with the observation that the second screen is unneeded about 70 percent of the time, and they still scored it that high. So the ergonomics are a problem you either solve with a $15 grip or you do not, and the people who solved it kept the device.
Performance by System
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is the same chip as the Odin 2 Portal and Retroid Pocket 6, and DROIX measured the Thor a little below the Portal in benchmarks, which is the fan and the thermal budget of a clamshell. In practice the results match.

The device database rates it perfect through GameCube, great on Wii and 3DS, good on Wii U and Switch, which matches the Pocket 6 and Portal on the same chip.
The DS and 3DS rows are the ones that matter, because they are the ones no other device can put in a table. The melonDS dual-screen fork is the emulator to use, and Retro Game Corps’ dual-screen guide is the setup reference. Steam Deck HQ did report input latency in rhythm games, so Elite Beat Agents at 4x is a visual win more than a competitive one.
For the Lite tier on the Snapdragon 865, expect the Retroid Pocket 5 results: PS2 and GameCube yes, Switch no. Held Games said skip the Lite, and given it is $70 less than the Base for a chip two generations older, so do I.
Software
Stock Android 13, nothing preinstalled. AYN’s control center handles performance and fan modes, and an Auto-Lock keeps the bottom screen from eating touches. DROIX called the second-screen software basic, and it is: the OS treats the bottom panel as a second display and it is up to the emulator to use it well.
AYN has been shipping firmware, which is more than it usually does. Update 1.0.0.293 added a task switcher and fixed DisplayPort out. 1.0.0.360 in January 2026 added an 80 percent charge limit, custom fan curves and OLED burn-in protection. 1.0.0.372 in February added an Ultra Black mode and fixed a bug that stuck the battery readout at 1 percent. Joey’s found brightness resets after sleep on an earlier build. ROCKNIX supports the Thor if you want Linux.
Battery Life
Two AMOLEDs and a fan on a 6,000 mAh cell. Joey’s measured about 6 hours of DS and 3DS at maximum brightness and about 10 hours at 50 percent. Steam Deck HQ got 15-plus hours on GBA and SNES and 2.5 to 3 hours on the heaviest loads. DROIX’s stress test ran 3 hours 10 minutes. Breath of the Wild is a 4-hour session. Idle drain is 1 to 3 percent a day.
Turn the bottom screen off when a game does not use it and the numbers get better.
AYN Thor vs the Alternatives
- AYANEO Pocket DS ($399 and up). The direct rival: a 7-inch OLED top screen and a 5-inch IPS bottom, bigger and pricier. The Thor’s bottom screen is AMOLED and its price is lower.
- AYN Odin 2 Portal ($259 direct). Same chip, one 7-inch screen, better for Switch and streaming, no DS trick. My Odin 2 Portal review covers it.

Who It’s For
Buy the AYN Thor if:
- DS and 3DS are a big part of your library and you want them on real dual screens
- You also want PS2, GameCube and most of Switch in the same device
- You will buy a grip and you can live with the triggers
- You order direct or from the official AliExpress store, and you can wait a month or two
Skip it if:
- You do not play DS or 3DS. The Pocket 6 is the same chip in a better-feeling body for less
- Trigger feel matters to you
- You want it this week. Amazon’s $640-plus listings are the only fast path and they are not worth it
- You are looking at the Lite. Spend the extra $70 on the Base
