Clamshell retro handhelds exist because the Game Boy Advance SP and the DS were clamshells, and a screen that closes over its own buttons is the only design that survives a jacket pocket. There are fewer of them than flat devices because a hinge costs money and the makers would rather ship another RG35XX variant. What Makes a Good Clamshell Handheld
A clamshell has to make three things right: the hinge, the screen behind it, and the d-pad. Both devices on this page use a 3.5-inch 640x480 IPS panel, which is the correct 4:3 shape for everything through PS1 and scales GBA at a clean 2x. The RG35XXSP runs an Allwinner H700 and the Flip an Actions Semi 7039S in the same class, so the emulation ratings are identical and the choice comes down to the shell. The RG35XXSP is a direct GBA SP homage with Anbernic’s better d-pad and a magnetic lid switch; the Miyoo Flip has a slightly better-feeling hinge and a stock firmware that is closer to usable. Both take muOS or GarlicOS from a microSD card.

Clamshells not yet in the database
Two devices are worth knowing about even though I have not added them to the compare tool. The Anbernic RG34XXSP arrived in 2025 on the same Allwinner H700 chip as the RG35XXSP, but with a 3.4-inch 720x480 screen that is a 3:2 aspect, which is exactly the GBA shape. If GBA is the reason you want a clamshell, that screen is the better match and the emulation is the same as the RG35XXSP. The other is the run of Miyoo Flip revisions, which fixed the early-batch hinge complaints; if you buy a Flip, buy a current one.
