NetherSX2 is AetherSX2 with the ads, the tracking and the drama removed. AetherSX2 was the best PS2 emulator Android ever had, its developer walked away in 2023 after a wave of harassment, and the final build he left behind had an ad SDK bolted on and a hard-coded expiry. NetherSX2 started as a patch that stripped those out, and the Classic release is the maintained continuation that I install on every Android handheld today.
If you have a Snapdragon 8-series handheld, this runs most of the PS2 library at full speed. If you have a Retroid Pocket 5 or an RG556, it runs a good chunk of it. The settings below are the difference between those results and a slideshow.
What You Need
| Item | Notes |
|---|---|
| An Android handheld, Android 9 or newer | Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 or better for the full library. Dimensity 1100 or Unisoc T820 for the lighter half. |
| The NetherSX2 Classic APK | From the project’s GitHub releases. Nowhere else; see below. |
| A PS2 BIOS dumped from your own console | Required. My PS2 BIOS guide covers the dump and the file. |
| Game images | .iso or .chd from your own discs. .chd saves space; my CHD guide covers conversion. |
| A microSD card | PS2 games are 1 to 4 GB each. 256 GB is a reasonable floor. |
Where to download NetherSX2
NetherSX2 is not on the Play Store. It is a GitHub project, and the Classic build is distributed as an APK on the releases page. There are a dozen websites with “nethersx2” in the domain that offer downloads; none of them are the project, and several bundle adware. Get the APK from the GitHub releases page linked at the bottom of this guide and check that the release notes match the version number in the app’s About screen.
First Launch
- Install the APK and open it. Grant storage access when asked. On Android 11 and newer it asks for “All files access”; allow it, or the BIOS picker shows an empty folder.
- The setup wizard walks you through three screens: language, BIOS, and Games directory.
- BIOS: tap Add, browse to your BIOS folder, and select the
.bin. The wizard shows the BIOS version and region once it reads it. - Games directory: pick the folder where your
.isoand.chdfiles live. It scans subfolders, so one top-level folder is enough. - Finish the wizard. Your games appear with cover art after the first scan.
If you skipped or dismissed the wizard, the same settings are under Settings > System > BIOS and Settings > Game List > Search Directories.
The Settings That Matter
NetherSX2 has hundreds of options and about eight of them change your frame rate. These are the eight.
| Setting | Path | What I set | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Renderer | Settings > Graphics > Renderer | Vulkan | Faster than OpenGL on every Adreno and most Mali chips. |
| Upscale multiplier | Settings > Graphics > Rendering | 1x on Dimensity or Unisoc, 2x on Snapdragon 8-series | Each step doubles GPU load. Native PS2 resolution looks fine on a 5-inch screen. |
| Aspect ratio | Settings > Graphics > Display | Auto or 16:9 with a widescreen patch | Most games have a built-in widescreen patch under Settings > Game Properties > Patches. |
| Speed preset | Settings > System > Preset | Safe | The Unsafe presets buy 10 percent speed and break audio in half the library. |
| Multi-threaded VU1 | Settings > System > Speedhacks | On | Free performance on any chip with 4 or more big cores. |
| EE Cycle Rate | Settings > System > Speedhacks | 0 (default) | Raising it breaks timing in more games than it helps. |
| Fast boot | Settings > System | On | Skips the PS2 logo. |
| Enable Cheats / Widescreen Patches | Settings > Game Properties | Per game | Global cheats slow loading. Enable them on the games that need them. |
Vulkan on Mali GPUs (the Dimensity 1100 in the Retroid Pocket 5) is fine on current builds. If a specific game shows garbled textures on Mali, switch that one game to OpenGL under its per-game properties rather than globally.
Per-Game Settings
Long-press any game and choose Game Properties. Everything in the global settings has a per-game override here, and this is where you fix the outliers without touching the games that already run.
Two per-game features worth knowing:
- Patches lists the widescreen patch and any no-interlace patch for that title. Enable both. No-interlace removes the shimmer on 480i games and costs nothing.
- Cheats reads
.pnachfiles fromNetherSX2/cheats/on your storage. Same format as PCSX2, so any PCSX2 cheat file works.
Controls
Physical controls on Android handhelds map automatically as a DualShock 2. Check Settings > Controller > Port 1 once to confirm the analog sticks registered; a few devices need the sticks bound by hand. The touchscreen overlay is under Settings > Controller > Touchscreen and I turn it off on anything with real buttons.
Save states are on the shoulder-button combo shown in the in-game menu, and the in-game menu itself is the swipe from the left edge or the back button.
What to Expect Per Device
| Chip | Example handhelds | Realistic result |
|---|---|---|
| Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 / 8 Elite | AYANEO Pocket S, Retroid Pocket 6, AYN Odin 2 | Full library, 2x to 3x upscale |
| Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 / 865 | AYN Odin, older flagships | Full library at 1x to 2x |
| Dimensity 1100 | Retroid Pocket 5, Pocket Flip 2 | Most games at 1x. God of War, Shadow of the Colossus and Gran Turismo 4 drop frames. |
| Unisoc T820 | Anbernic RG556, RG557 | 2D games, fighting games, RPGs. Skip the demanding 3D titles. |
| Unisoc T618 / T610 | RG405M, RG505, Retroid Pocket 2S | A few lightweight titles. Not a PS2 device. |
The honest summary: PS2 emulation starts being fun at the Dimensity 1100 tier and stops being a compromise at Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.
Common Problems
“No BIOS found” on launch. Wrong folder or no storage permission. Check Android Settings > Apps > NetherSX2 > Permissions, then re-add the BIOS under Settings > System > BIOS.
Games listed without cover art and will not boot. Corrupt or incomplete image. Re-rip the disc or re-convert to CHD.
Audio crackles. An Unsafe speed preset, or the CPU is throttling. Set the preset back to Safe and drop the upscale one notch.
Black screen after the PS2 logo on Mali. Set that game’s renderer to OpenGL in Game Properties.
Slow after 20 minutes. Thermal throttling. Lower the upscale, cap the frame rate at 60 under Settings > Graphics, and take the case off.
Save file gone. Memory cards live in NetherSX2/memcards/. Back the folder up. If you reinstalled the app, restore it there.
NetherSX2 vs AetherSX2 vs PCSX2 on Android
There is no official PCSX2 for Android; the desktop project has said as much. AetherSX2’s final build still installs but expires and carries ads. NetherSX2 Classic is the same emulation core with the junk removed and current fixes applied. There is no reason to run anything else on Android.
FAQ
Is NetherSX2 legal?
The emulator is. It is built from the open-source AetherSX2 code. The BIOS must come from your own PS2 and the games from your own discs.
Does NetherSX2 need a BIOS?
Yes, and there is no substitute. See the PS2 BIOS guide.
Which format is better, ISO or CHD?
CHD. Same data, 20 to 40 percent smaller, and NetherSX2 reads it natively with no speed penalty.
Can I play with a Bluetooth controller?
Yes. Pair it in Android, then bind it under Settings > Controller > Port 1.
Where do I get the widescreen patches?
They are built in. Enable them per game under Game Properties > Patches.
